Summary and Mission
Learn to Read of St. Johns County, Fla., is a 501-(c) (3) non-profit organization partially supported by St. Johns County and the United Way.
The volunteer-based organization provides free literacy skills assessment and instruction to underserved people in St. Augustine, Fla., and surrounding cities. In addition to one-on-one literacy tutoring, Learn to Read has recently expanded its services to help people learn English as a second language (ESL) through personal tutoring and group conversation courses.
Learn to Read believes literacy skills are vital for people to participate in American society and find work – especially here in St. Johns County, as the area becomes one of the highest-income counties in the United States and the local cost of living soars.
Through literacy, people are empowered to improve their lives and the lives of those around them. Helping adults improve their basic literacy skills also benefits their children, causing a direct and measurable impact on both their education and quality of life.
History and Methods
Learn to Read was founded by local members of the American Association of University Women in 1986 as a grassroots organization dedicated to teaching reading, writing and math skills to adults (ages 16 years and older).
Our tutoring methods and materials are based upon the work of Dr. Frank Charles Laubach (1884-1970), the leading pioneer of the contemporary adult literacy movement. He developed the “Each One Teach One” instructional program.
Our volunteer tutors work on a one-on-one basis, teaching reading, writing, math and English as a second language (ESL) and preparing adult students for the GED test. Several of our tutors teach ESL classes and assist with citizenship applications. Tutoring is done throughout St. Johns County in churches, libraries, businesses and at the Learn to Read office.
